We take great pride in building, upholstering and saving quality furniture in and around the Chicagoland area.

  • Is reupholstery worth it compared to buying new?

This is a great question and it has many layers to it.  At slipcover plus upholstery, we truly believe in reupholstering most pieces of furniture, however, not every piece of furniture will make sense to have reupholstered, and I can give my opinion on what types of pieces qualify, and what types of furniture probably do not make sense to reupholster.  The first misconception about furniture is that it’s old and bad, when it comes to furniture that is rarely the case, typically with furniture it’s the opposite, the older the piece of furniture usually means that it was built with very good quality, it has good bones, hardwood was used vs. a cheap type of wood, and it was built with  more support rails on the frame, and  with doweled joint connections, rather than only glue and staples.  A solid frame will still be solid after 10,20 plus years of use, and a cheaply made frame will not be around after 5,6 10 years.  You also will feel the difference in comfort between a well made quality sofa, chair etc.. vs. a low end sofa, chair etc.. Most quality pieces of furniture are made with 8 way hand tied coil springs, and the lower quality pieces of furniture will have only webbing, or zig zag springs as support, this will effect how comfortable a piece of furniture sits, and how long it will keep it’s level of comfort.  So, if your furniture has good bones it is typically worth the investment of reupholstering vs. buying a new lower quality piece of furniture, and you’re also are helping the environment by recycling said piece of furniture which is a bonus environment. With custom window treatments you can also address angled windows, sloping windows, and skylights.

  • How long do upholstery jobs usually last?

This depends on if you’re purchasing the fabric with us, or on your own, and the complexity of your pieces as well as the number of pieces that need to be reupholstered.  I can walk you through the process to give you a good idea on what to expect for timing on most jobs with us.  The first step is getting your fabric, we have thousands of fabrics to choose from, most of our fabrics are in sample books and if in stock can take anywhere from 3 – 15 business days for us to receive, we also carry in stock fabrics, so if you select an in stock fabric then obviously there isn’t any delay with the fabric.  Once we have your fabric in our hands we then contact you to schedule a pick-up of your furniture, we typically are picking up your furniture in about 1-2 weeks’ time, and from there your job goes into our upholstery queue.  If we are upholstering dining room seats then I would say we can have those pieces typically ready in 1.5 – 2 weeks, and if you are upholstering an armchair figure more in the 3–4-week timeframe.  If your job requires all new padding on the frame, and new cushion inserts then we are typically looking at about 3-6 weeks’ completion, and of course all these time frames are subject to change dependent on how busy the queue is.  Once your pieces are completed and inspected, we then will contact you to schedule either a delivery or pick up of your furniture.

  • Can sectionals and oversized furniture be reupholstered?

Slipcover plus upholstery is reupholstering sectional sofas and oversized furniture all the time, so yes, we can reupholster almost any piece of furniture no matter it’s style, shape and size.  One of the reasons we reupholster more sectional and oversized pieces of furniture than most upholstery shops are for a few good reasons.  The first reason we upholster more sectional sofas than most is that we have a 15-foot box truck and have very affordable delivery options which most upholstery shops do not offer.  We also have a wide selection of fabric options at affordable prices, and if you purchase a bolt of fabric with slipcover plus upholstery, which is what a sectional typically requires, then we have some unbeatable prices which make upholstering a large sectional sofa much more affordable and seems to make sense to our customers rather than buying a new sofa.

  • What affects the cost of upholstery?

Having a piece reupholstered has many different price points dependent on style, size, add Ons and condition.  Slipcover plus upholstery prices every piece from a well thought out and calculated price chart that takes into account many factors such as, labor, materials, and business overhead.  Slipcover plus upholstery has over 30 years’ experience in the upholstery business and we know what to expect on most jobs that come our way, and we price the jobs accordingly.  A typical armchair without a back pillow or a skirt, and is in good condition meaning, the cushion inserts are satisfactory, and the padding on the frame, and the frame itself is in good condition has a base price starting point, and then the price fluctuates from there.  If the chair requires either new cushion inserts, or new padding on the frame, or any frame or spring repairs, we have to charge according to our charts, and if the chairs have what we call add Ons, such as, skirts, back cushions, buttons, button tufting, or channels as well as nail head trim, all of these effect the price of a chair, sofa, loveseat etc.. upholstery project.  The same will go for sofas, Loveseats and any other piece of furniture.  We also take into consideration the style and size of certain pieces of furniture, such as wing chairs vs. an armchair, or an oversized chair or sofa vs. a standard-sized piece of furniture.  Slipcover plus upholstery makes sure that our prices make sense for us and our clients.

  • What upholstery fabrics are best for pets and kids?

We carry thousands of fabrics for upholstery, slipcovers and drapery, and the first thing I would do when purchasing a fabric is check the double rub count and or abrasions.  If you are looking to reupholster a chair, sofa, or any piece of furniture you should take into consideration the pieces usage, and where it sits in your home.  If it’s an everyday sofa and I have little kids, then you may want to consider a heavy duty fabric with a double rub or abrasion count at or above 25,000 or higher, and you may want to consider a stain protection / performance fabric such as, Crypton, revolution, endurapel, sustained, or have us spray the fabric with a guardsman fabric protector.   If you have pets with claws and they scratch at the furniture then we strongly suggest a very tight weave fabric such as a polyester, polyester blend,  velvet, microfiber or a chenille type of fabric, these fabrics hold up the best vs. nails and claws.  If you are looking for a washable fabric then I suggest checking with us about the cleaning code, and we will make sure it has a code of W which means soap and water washable,, and please never put your fabric in the dryer, let it air dry for the best results.   If I had a sofa in a heavy traffic room with kids and pets I think I would select a Polyester blend with a 25,000 plus double rub and then stain protect it with one of the many stain protection options available.
